The Origin of CBD
We are sure that you have noticed the surge in the availability of CBD products in the United States. The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 legalized hemp-derived products and a new market was launched. What is the origin of CBD in the United States? If you are a history buff, or just want to know the background behind CBD, this blog is for you.
Ancient Society and CBD
Did ancient societies know of the health benefits of CBD? It is believed that the answer is "yes." Researchers and historians believe that the use of CBD to promote a healthy life began in Asia. In 2727 BC, Emperor Sheng Neng of China made a cannabis-based tea. So, when you sip a hot cup of CBD-infused tea, know that the traditions are thousands of years in the making. American historians know that Native Americans recognized the healing properties of Marijuana. They used the plant to recover from illness, but they also used it to celebrate and as a stimulating agent. Cannabis's arrival in the Americas is still somewhat of a mystery. Some believe that the plant made its way to North America from Asia by travelers across the Bering Strait. Or did Christopher Columbus introduce it to the continent? Historians are not entirely sure, but we do know that Cannabis was present and used through the early 20th century. In the mid-1800s, William O'Shaughnessy published a medical paper documenting the positive medical aspects and uses of cannabis. Even Queen Elizabeth was known to use the plant to relieve pain. If Cannabis showed positive results in treating a wide range of medical problems, over thousands of years, what happened?
The Marijuana Prohibition Years
If you studied American history, then you know of Prohibition that ran from 1920 to December 1933. Prohibition is known for its focus on anti-alcohol. Between the years 1911 and 1937, both state and federal governments took a prohibitive stance on the use of Cannabis. American was in a restrictive mood. In 1940, Dr. Roger Adams and his team at the University of Illinois isolated the CBD chemical compound. They realized that the compound had healing properties, but did not include the psychoactive qualities of THC. This was a milestone discovery. Unfortunately, due to strict government laws, even scientists found it hard to study the CBD compound.
